Class A1 Small Village
There were seven entries this year and one received a bronze award, two silver, three silver gilt and one gold.
The winner of the BBC Radio Newcastle Trophy was Stanghow.
Stanghow goes from strength to strength. Every garden in the village is well maintained and colourful this year. Borders and grass outside houses are all excellently maintained, even in front of empty premises. Despite being 800 feet above sea level this is an outstanding entry, adapting the planting to suit the high winds from the moors and the last frosts and early winters. Resource management is important here – for example, local composting and water barrels for all to use. Much of the village’s fund raising is ongoing throughout the year by means of social events. A very attractive village with a wonderful community spirit.
