Towns and Coastal Resorts

48 towns and coastal resorts entered the Northumbria in Bloom competition in 2007. 42 gained medals.

If any localities have websites giving information on their Northumbria in Bloom entry, please feel free to contact the Website Administrator to establish a link.  Links are at the bottom of this page.

Towns are classed according to their population size.

Class B1 Small Towns

There were ten entries in 2007.  Two gained Bronze awards, three Silver and three Silver Gilt.

Haltwhistle

The overall winner was Haltwhistle. The judges were very impressed by its progress and said it was going from strength to strength. The local authority is to be congratulated on the bedding displays and excellent grass cutting. The shopping precinct is much improved.  There is good landscaping and shrub planting.  The bowling club and recreation ground are excellent as are the schools.  The church grounds have been replanted to a high standard after alterations. There are bird and bat boxes in evidence. There is a good team of litter pickers and the town is extremely clean.

Class B2  Towns

There were twelve entries in 2007.  Ten medals were awarded, three Bronze, four Silver, two Silver Gilt and one Gold

Morpeth

Morpeth moved up into the Gold medal position this year because of the outstanding shopping area and the very impressive public involvement, particularly the children's efforts.  Grass cutting was generally very good.  The commercial areas and public parks were a credit to the town.  The town hall, market square and the scouts centenary displays at the clock tower and in Carlisle Park were stunning.  All involved in the Millenium Garden and the approach to it are to be congratulated. The scouts play a large part, along with other volunteers in helping to keep up the standards of the town. The judges were impressed by the overall management of natural areas, in particular the monitoring of the river. There was a noticeable absence of litter, dog fouling and graffiti. Street furniture is plentiful and of very good standard. The whole town looked clean and well cared for.

Class B3 Large Town

There were seven entries and all received medals, four Bronze and three Silver.

Whickham Chase Park

Whickham repeated last year's success and came in as the class winner. Once again the judges praised its brilliant floral displays and grass care. The bedding overall was very good. The restoration of the Heritage Gardenhas now reached a very high standard. It was awarded a Gold medal in its own right and the May Woolley award for the best voluntary project in the region. The increased efforts by local businesses should be encouraged and the judges were pleased to note that the pubs and shops are beginning to play their part.  Much good work is being done in Watergate Country Park and Sunniside Park. There is an excellent and enthusiastic Bloom Committee.

Class E Coastal Resorts

The three entries all did well again with Silver for Newbiggin by the Sea and South Shields and Silver Gilt for Saltburn by the Sea.

South Shields was praised for its excellent displays on the sea front, a real tourist attraction. The judges liked the baskets on Ocean Road, the good waste management and the very clean Green Flag beach but felt more involvement by the community was needed.

 Saltburn
The Best Coastal Resort Award went to Saltburn by the Sea.  The judges said the formal design in the Italian Garden was very effective this year. The sustainable planting alongside container displays was very good and the Valley Gardens are a lovely secluded area. The judges liked the Woodland Centre's role in involving and educating children but they suggest more effort could be made on the Marine Parade. Saltburn works hard to achieve its clean and tidy aspect. It has a particularly strong community involvement which works very successfully with the local authority and businesses in the town and Valley Garden. The judges were impressed by the successful fund raising efforts and wide awareness of Northumbria in Bloom.
