Inaugural Meeting 2008

How can you win a National Gold Medal for your village, town or city? How difficult is it to acquire a Green Flag Award?  What are the organisers of Britain in Bloom planning next? All three questions were answered last week when representatives from ninety three communities throughout the north east were welcomed by the Mayor to Gateshead Leisure Centre for the launch of Northumbria in Bloom 2008. The attractively arranged conference facility was adorned in part by groups of the highly scented Narcissus `Cheerfulness,` a cultivar whose name set the tone for that morning.

In her address Mrs Eileen Burn, chair of Northumbria in Bloom, outlined the successes of last year at both regional and national level and thanked everyone for their continuing efforts. Eileen`s philosophy is clearly that anyone who enters into the spirit of the event, be it city, town, village, minor or community award, is a winner anyway. Such an effective communicator, her parting message was, “Whatever happens, enjoy yourselves.”

The competition, which embraces all sections of the community and has been running for forty years in Northumbria, continues to go from strength to strength. This was reflected in the calibre of guests invited to speak at the meeting comprising representatives from; a national gold medal winning village, The Green Flag scheme and the RHS campaign manager for Britain in Bloom.

Mrs Verna MacNaughton is so committed to the Earsdon village cause. Her power point presentation revealed exactly what it takes to win gold at national level. Total involvement of the whole community, a determination to succeed, thorough planning and teamwork were part of the message. Spontaneous applause from an appreciative audience suggested that her ideas would be put to good use.

Alice Patterson is the RHS Campaign Manager for Britain in Bloom. Clearly impressed by Northumbria`s performance record in The National Finals, she gave an insight to the aspirations of the event organisers. Their most recent campaign to promote children`s gardening interest in schools has long been embraced by us through the main and minor awards categories and an enviable Children`s Painting Competition.
